Astm D2794 Pdf Free 13: A Guide to Impact Resistance of Organic Coatings

Organic coatings are widely used to protect metal surfaces from corrosion, abrasion, and other environmental factors. However, these coatings may also be subjected to damaging impacts during the manufacture and use of the coated products. How can we measure the resistance of organic coatings to the effects of rapid deformation?

One of the standard methods for testing the impact resistance of organic coatings is Astm D2794, which covers a procedure for rapidly deforming by impact a coating film and its substrate and for evaluating the effect of such deformation[^1^]. This method can be useful in predicting the performance of organic coatings for their ability to resist cracking caused by impacts.

In this article, we will explain what Astm D2794 is, how it works, and where you can download it for free.

What is Astm D2794?

Astm D2794 is a test method developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), an international organization that provides standards for various materials, products, systems, and services. Astm D2794 was first published in 1974 and has been revised several times since then. The latest version is Astm D2794-93 (2019), which was approved in January 2019.

Astm D2794 is designed to measure the resistance of organic coatings to the effects of rapid deformation (impact). The test method involves dropping a weight from a certain height onto a coated panel that is clamped in a fixture. The weight has a hemispherical indenter that contacts the coating surface. The impact causes a deformation of the coating and the substrate, which may result in cracking or detachment of the coating. The extent of damage to the coating is then evaluated by visual inspection or by other methods such as tape test or mandrel bend test.

How does Astm D2794 work?

The main steps of Astm D2794 are as follows:

  • Prepare the test specimens by coating metal panels with the organic coating of interest. The panels should have a thickness of 0.032 inch (0.81 mm) or less and a width of at least 3 inches (76 mm). The length of the panels should be sufficient to fit into the test fixture. The coating should be applied and cured according to the manufacturer's instructions or as agreed upon by the parties involved.

  • Condition the test specimens at 23 Â 2ÂC (73 Â 3ÂF) and 50 Â 5% relative humidity for at least 16 hours before testing.

  • Select the appropriate weight and height for the impact test. The weight should have a mass of either 2 lb (0.91 kg) or 4 lb (1.81 kg) and a diameter of 0.625 inch (15.9 mm). The height should be chosen based on the expected impact resistance of the coating. The standard suggests some typical values for different types of coatings, but these are not mandatory. The height can range from 4 inches (102 mm) to 60 inches (1524 mm) or more.

  • Clamp the test specimen in the test fixture with the coated side facing up. The fixture should have a circular opening with a diameter of 0.64 inch (16.3 mm) that allows the indenter to contact the coating surface. The fixture should also have a stop that prevents the weight from bouncing back after impact.

  • Drop the weight from the selected height onto the test specimen and record the result. The result can be expressed as pass or fail, or as inch-pounds (or joules) of energy required to cause failure. Failure can be defined as any cracking or detachment of the coating that is visible to the unaided eye or that can be detected by other methods such as tape test or mandrel bend test.

  • Repeat steps 4 and 5 for at least three specimens for each coating and calculate the average result.
